Who invented the Tolix chair?
The original Tolix chair was designed by Xavier Pauchard in 1934. Pauchard was born in 1880 in Le Morvan, known as the green heart of France. At that point in time, wood was the most important construction material however, his father and grandfather before him were zinc roofers. In 1907, Pauchard discovered that he could protect sheet metal from rusting by dipping it in molten zinc at 450⁰C, or by galvanising it. 10 years later, he set up a factory making steel household items and eventually in 1927, registered his trademark symbol as Tolix.
The classic chair, which is a favourite in cafés and retro kitchens all over the world, was designed in 1934. The chair was originally designed to be outside in all weathers, which is why there were holes in the seats – to let the rainwater drain off. However, café owners complained that the chairs wouldn’t stack properly so Pauchard had to tweak his design. By 1956, the classic Tolix chair was finally created, with a slimmer frame and the ability to stack it 25 chairs high. The popularity of these chairs went sky high, being used in factories, hospitals, and offices as well as hospitality settings.
Since then, the Tolix chair has become a worldwide favourite in restaurants, bars, and homes thanks to its hardwearing frame. An example of the chair is even on display in New York’s Museum of Modern Art and Paris’s Pompidou Centre.
